Personal Narrative:

I have been drawing or painting ever since I was able to hold the instruments in my hand, though most of my surviving pieces from before the age of 10 are from preschool and elementary school classes. One of my first memories of consciously trying to create art that wasn't assigned is from a 3rd grade class in San Diego at Tierra Santa elementary. I saw a classmate drawing mazes and so I tried to draw my own. After this experiment, I kept drawing mazes for several years, on lined paper, and on the inside covers of books. In junior high I switched to drawing the logos of the bands I was listening to at the time. Once I got to high school, I took a drawing, painting, and photography class over the span of several years. In my spare time I began to draw detailed pattern drawings with black pens, typically covering a whole sheet of paper. In my junior year painting class I was introduced to tempra paints and we copied a landscape painting our teacher had done. This was my first structured painting. At home I began experimenting with water color, painting abstractly, and using techniques I was reading about from the surrealists, such as automatic painting. For several years I worked on felt tip pen drawings and watercolors. It wasn't until 2003 that I begain using acrylic paints. It was then that I started a series of my interpretations of planets in our solar system. In 2003 I traveled to Spain, Portugal, and Italy, and this helped inspire me to start doing photography more seriously again.
